Wismed Brand Story by CEO Pawel Wisniewski

CEO - Pawel Wisniewski

My name is Pawel Wisniewski I am an Anesthesiologist and CEO of Wismed, a small company with offices in Poland and South Africa, we design and manufacture medical devices for endourology.

The Beginning

I started Wismed with one flagship medical device by investing my life savings into the production of dedicated tooling and machinery. I was embarking on this adventure while practicing medicine full time. The device in question, Peditrol is still on the market today and is still one of our best sellers. We have achieved immense success in markets like Japan and South Africa. This is proof that if you believe in your idea and have the foresight to invest in yourself, you will reap the rewards long after.

Difficulties

Of-course, this industry, like any other is not without its challenges, there are numerous obstacles, especially for smaller companies, regulatory compliance and certification can be prohibitively costly in terms of resources and time. Not to mention supply chain issues and the rise of energy and transportation costs. There are no short cuts, especially because we are potentially saving human lives. There is an enormous amount of research that goes into medical device development and manufacturing. It is a very complex and highly controlled process. Everything needs to be considered in equal measure from the device functionality, biocompatibility, and safety to how it is stored, packaged, and disposed of.

Solutions

We have been extremely fortunate to have been awarded funding by the European Union in the category of Intelligent Development to foster innovation and research in minimally invasive urology.  The focus or Wismed has been product innovation, which means we can channel our resources towards design and development while working with contract manufactures to bring our inventions to market.

With over 30 years of experience as an Anesthesiologist in operating theatre, I have been part of many different operations in different specialties and have experienced first-hand some of the challenges that doctors have to overcome. For me, it all starts with the needs of the user, this is at the forefront of every idea and every innovation, how can we make the procedure more seamless and improve the outcome.

I have a passion for developing medical devices that are simple, yet well-designed, made from high quality materials that offer better functionality. Because when surgeons have better tools at their disposal, they can improve the outcome of the procedure and ultimately improve quality of life.

Mission

Wismed is on a path of rapid growth, and we are bringing to market several new devices for the removal, treatment, and management of kidney stones. This is one of the fastest growing diseases in modern times with high recurrence rates. I have an innate idea of what the market wants and what technologies will be well accepted.

Advances in how we practice medicine are driven by advances in medical technologies. The true drivers of change are the innovators who push the boundaries of what is possible.
