Fourie Safety System (4L Urine Bag) Instructional Video
The Wismed Fourie Safety System is a large-capacity urine bag with an overflow pouch, designed to prevent bladder distention. Intended for post-operative use, following prostate surgery, where continuous bladder irrigation is required.
The bag is connected in theatre by the surgical nurse. Do not remove the paper clip at this stage, as it keeps the overflow pouch inactive.
Once the patient arrives in the ward, the attending nurse should remove the paper clip to activate the overflow system.
The pouch deploys automatically when the primary bag fills up and isn’t drained in time. This prevents backflow pressure and patient pain, reducing the risk of bleeding and bladder injury.
If a blockage occurs, use the blue bulb to flush the line. Remember to first clamp the tube using the blue slide clamp.
What to do when the overflow pouch deploys
Stop the irrigation flow.
Drain the main collection bag.
Unscrew the full overflow balloon and roll it into a bucket.
Screw on a replacement overflow balloon. Remove Paper Clip
Dispose of the full balloon according to hospital protocol.
Alternatively, if replacement overflow balloons are not available, the entire urine bag can be replaced.
