ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon 2026: A Month of Restoring Lives, Renewing Hope and Advancing Healthcare Freedom

Every day, thousands of South Africans wait for access to essential surgical care — waiting for relief from pain, waiting for the chance to return to work, waiting for the opportunity to fully participate in family and community life.

The ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon 2026 was created to change that reality.

Running from 1–31 July 2026, this month-long healthcare initiative brings together healthcare professionals, hospitals & industry partners, and public sector stakeholders in a united effort to reduce surgical waiting lists and accelerate access to life-changing procedures for patients who have waited far too long.

Because behind every operation is more than a medical procedure.

There is a person.
There is a family.
There is a future waiting to be restored.

Turning healthcare access into action

Led by African Synergy Health (ASH), the Surgical Marathon represents a powerful commitment to improving healthcare access for South Africans. Through collaboration with healthcare professionals and the Departments of Health in Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, the initiative is helping patients receive the care they need when they need it most.

Every successful operation is a reminder of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together to address critical healthcare challenges.

Honouring a legacy of service

As we commemorate the values of compassion, dignity and service associated with Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon serves as a reminder that meaningful change begins when people choose to serve others.

This initiative would not be possible without the dedication of the many healthcare professionals and industry partners answering the call.

The journey continues: Walking towards Healthcare Freedom

While the ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon is already making a difference, the movement continues beyond the operating theatre.

On 18 July 2026, thousands of South Africans will gather at the University of Pretoria’s Tuks Sports Grounds for the ASH Long Walk to Healthcare Freedom — a symbolic walk of solidarity with those still waiting for access to care.
